Fire destroys two attractions at Lagoon amusement park

FARMINGTON — Fire destroyed a decades-old building and a children’s ride at Lagoon amusement park late Saturday and the cause is being investigated.
Employees at the Farmington park, which is closed for the winter, smelled smoke at about 9 a.m. and called 911, Lagoon spokesperson Adam Leishman said Monday. Firefighters quickly put out the fire, limiting the extent to smoke and water damage. But because of the age of the building, crews kept watch, he said. The fire erupted again at about 9 p.m. “and this time it was a total loss,” he said.
The Carousel Candy store and the Scamper children’s bumper cars ride, side by side in the building, were destroyed. The building was at least as old as those built throughout the park after a 1953 fire burned down most of the attractions, Leishman said. The ride had been open since 1977.
Leishman said the fire marshal was investigating the cause. He said it may have been an electrical problem. Farmington Fire Chief Guido Smith said later Monday that the investigation has not been finished, but he added, “I can confidently say that nothing appears to be intentional.”
The Farmington Fire Department said on its Facebook page that the South Davis Metro, Kaysville, Layton and Hill Air Force Base fire departments also responded to the Saturday night fire.

The amusement park will rebuild at the fire site, but plans for specific features were not decided as of Monday morning. Leishman said the park will open on schedule this spring.
