CLINTON — A man was fatally shot by police after reportedly stabbing two people Thursday night, Clinton Police Chief Shawn Stoker said.

Speaking to media after the events, in video provided by Fox 13, Stoker said the incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. in the area of 1700 North and 1300 West when a man returned home and immediately became involved in an argument with another male resident.

According to Stoker, the suspect reportedly stabbed the other man, who then escaped the home and ran to a neighboring house. Another neighbor, perhaps drawn by the commotion, Stoker said, came outside, where she encountered the suspect in the street and was stabbed “multiple times.”

An initial call to police reported a female running down the street and screaming, Stoker said, but the information was later updated to include that a woman had been stabbed.

Responding officers encountered the suspect in the street and “at some point in that interaction, shots were fired,” Stoker said.

The suspect, a man in his 30s, had been living at the home temporarily, according to Stoker. No other details about him were available for release, Stoker told the TV crew Thursday night. Attempts to reach Clinton PD for additional information were unsuccessful Friday.

The two stabbing victims, another male in his 30s and a female believed to be in her 50s, were taken to the hospital. Their conditions were unknown. “We hope they make it. We hope they’re OK,” Stoker said.

No officers were injured, Stoker said. Per standard protocol following fatal police shootings, two Clinton officers have been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

No motive has yet been determined, said Stoker, who described the attacks as “unprovoked.”
