Letter: Our schools are failing to properly teach students

Jan 7, 2025

Recently I heard Superintendent Gina Butters speak on education in Weber County. She is in charge of 30,000 students and 900 are homeless. She referred to all the excellent social services. Many schools have places for showers, tv, activities and sleep.

She said nothing about making our teacher teach better. Going to school after Sputnik the USA was number one in the industrial countries and has been till the last ten years. Now the USA is number 30 in industrial countries! More than half the employees in public education are administrators, not teachers. Parents are put last. We need to teach reading, writing, math and science vigorously. At our schools in Weber County we need to push learning not social services. We have HUD and WIC and numerous social services. I realize that kids cannot learn if hungry or tired but our concern is their education and only education will allow them to advance.

We now have the worst-educated workforce in the world. Because our workers are among the most highly paid in the world, that makes Americans uncompetitive in the global economy.

As of September 2022, 48 million US borrowers owed more than 1.6 trillion in federal student loans.

The USA is in trouble as far as education goes. We are failing to educate our children. Ask any business man how hard it is to train new employees. They do not have the basics of reading, writing, math and science. Let’s put parents first, pay teachers more, and teach, teach and more teaching. Students should read a book a week. And never allow cell phones in any school!!!
