Letter: Churches’ broad power puts them above the law

Feb 28, 2025

People don’t realize it, but church denominations function very much like political parties.

In America churches have been given a lot of religious freedom. With a lot of money in their coffers and ambitious men in leadership positions, they often feel like they are above the law.

Churches feel like they have the freedom to override the public education system whenever they can. They want to replace social studies and science instruction with the Ten Commandments.

Churches feel like they have the freedom to override the public health system. They teach their members, “Jesus is our vaccine.”

Churches feel like they can override the criminal law. They don’t want public law enforcement and justice agencies to deal with sexual predation and lack of financial transparency inside the private confines of the church.

Churches feel like they can override the Constitution. The Constitution was written by fallible men, but the scripture was written by God and given to infallible prophets.

Have the churches been given too much latitude to undermine the legitimate agencies of people’s government? It appears they have.
