Letter: Amendment B is good for Utah students, taxpayers

Oct 16, 2024

In 2023 Utah Senate and House unanimously supported placing Amendment B on your November ballot for Utahns to vote on. It’s clear why: it’s good for Utah’s education system.

Utah has a $3.3 billion endowment for public schools called the State School Fund. Each year, every public school in Utah receives essential funding from the School LAND Trust Distributions. These funds extend traditional education funding and are discretionary, allowing each school to determine how best to use their School LAND Trust Fund Distribution to meet their unique needs.

Currently, these distributions are capped at 4%. Amendment B proposes increasing the cap to 5%, meaning more money for Utah schools at no cost to taxpayers.

If Amendment B were in place today, Utah students would have received $120 million instead of $106 million in LAND Trust distributions.

Thanks to school trust land revenue and prudent investments, Utah’s School Fund continues to grow, benefiting both current students and future generations. Amendment B aims to create more balanced distributions from the State School Fund, ensuring that both current and future schoolchildren receive necessary support.

When you vote this November, your ballot will include: Constitutional Amendment B

Shall the Utah Constitution be amended to increase the limit on the annual distributions from the State School Fund to public schools from 4% to 5% of the fund?

Just as we unanimously voted to place Amendment B on your November ballot, I hope you’ll join us by supporting Amendment B.

Sen. Ann Millner

R-Ogden
