Letter: Promises made
Though I did not vote for Donald Trump, I am excited to now have a president whose motto is “Promises Made, Promises Kept.” He promises to get tough on crime. And the 2024 Republican party platform reinforces that message by promising that “the Republican Party must stand for equal treatment for all. Likewise, the Republican Party must ensure the equal application of law regardless of political affiliation or personal beliefs.” President-elect Trump was found guilty of 34 felonies in an open court of law by a randomly-chosen jury of his peers. He had the best legal representation money can buy and has the right to appeal, like any other American citizen. So will Donald Trump receive the same penalty for all those felonies as any other American, even if poor or black, would get or will he get special treatment because he’s rich and famous? Did Donald Trump really mean he’d only get tough on crimes committed by the rest of us? He called for shooting shoplifters who were only guilty of misdemeanors. What does he think we should do with people who commit felonies? Or do all criminals now get to ignore the law and blame crooked courts out to get them? Is that what Republicans mean when they call for equal treatment of all?
