ROY — The summer road construction season is approaching for both Weber and Davis counties, and the Utah Department of Transportation has its work cut out for it.

Among the area’s biggest projects is the reconstruction of the Interstate 15 interchange at 5600 South — also known as state Route 97 — in Roy.

UDOT Senior Communications Manager Mitch Shaw told the Standard-Examiner in an email this week that the ongoing project is on schedule and just finished some heavy work.

“The most recent construction news is that earlier this month, crews successfully completed the installation of bridge girders for the new I-15 structure at 5600 South (SR-97),” he said. “Over the course of four nights, a total of eight bridge girders were installed. Each girder weighs approximately 118,000 lbs. and spans 211 ft.”

He said this action was a major component to the project.

“The installation of these bridge girders is a critical step in ensuring the structural integrity and longevity of the bridge,” he said. “Bridge beams provide essential support, distributing the load from the deck and traffic above to the supporting elements. This not only enhances safety for vehicles and pedestrians but also increases the overall efficiency of transportation in the area. Despite challenging cold and rainy conditions, the crews maintained a high level of professionalism and stayed on schedule.”

Shaw said disruptions on the project have been minimal.

“We had an incident where a subcontractor accidentally hit a fiber line underground, causing an outage in the area,” he said. “But the issue was resolved within the day and there was an after action review to analyze what happened and how contractors can prevent something similar from happening in the future. But for the most part, the project has been going very smoothly. On time and on budget.”

He said the remainder of the month is also looking busy.

“Crews are continuing construction around both the I-15 northbound and southbound corridor through March,” he said. “Retaining walls are being constructed and drainage work is being completed. Excavation activities are also underway to prepare for concrete placement for abutments and deck panels.”

As the year goes along, Shaw said work on the interchange will largely move off of the interstate as the project speeds toward its anticipated 2026 completion.

“Perhaps the biggest thing drivers can expect to see this year is that we will likely be off of I-15,” he said. “So all of the work we are doing there now should be finished this year and then the remainder of our construction will happen off of the freeway. We’ve prioritized getting off of I-15 as soon as possible.”

Other ongoing projects

Shaw added that there will be continuing work elsewhere in the region, including:

S.R. 108 widening, 300 North to 1800 North

Cost: $86 million

Anticipated completion: 2025

“This is another project that began in 2023, but will involve heavy construction during 2025,” Shaw said. “As part of the project, SR-108, or 2000 West, will be widened between West Point and Clinton from 300 North through the 1800 North intersection, from three lanes to five lanes. Intersection improvements will be made at 800 North, 1300 North, and 1800 North, as well as the addition of a multi-use path, full-width shoulders, curb, gutter, and sidewalk to improve safety and accessibility and promote active transportation.”

Shepard Lane interchange

Cost: $151 million

Anticipated completion: 2026

“UDOT is building a new interchange along I-15 at Shepard Lane in Farmington,” Shaw said. “This new interchange will help alleviate congestion, connect communities, and improve safety for all modes of transportation. Aside from the interchange UDOT is also building a new noise wall, a direct connection from 1500 West to the Shepard Lane interchange, a new road between Innovator Drive and 1500 West, a new shared-use facilities at Shepard Lane and Park Lane. UDOT will also remove the existing Shepard Lane bridge at I-15.

“The interchange will improve walking and biking facilities over I-15 at Shepard Lane and along Park Lane. Multi-modal improvements at Shepard Lane include the construction of a 10-foot shared-use trail on the north side of Shepard Lane and sidewalks on the south side. Park Lane multi-modal improvements include a new multi-modal path connecting FrontRunner facilities on the west side of I-15 to Park Lane east of US-89.”

Starting in 2025

Shaw said a handful of projects will also be getting underway in the area this year, including:

1800 North interchange

Cost: $385 million

Anticipated Completion: 2027

“Beginning in 2025, this project will improve east/west mobility in northern Davis County by adding an interchange at 1800 North and I-15, widening 1800 North from the freeway to 2000 West, and creating a new area where Hill Air Force Base can build an additional entrance gate in the future,” Shaw said. “The widening of 1800 North includes seven lanes from I-15 to 250 West, five lanes from 250 West to 2000 West, and a new bridge over the rail crossing.”

I-84 Weber River bridge replacement

Cost: $52 million

Anticipated Completion: 2027

“The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will replace I-84 bridges over the Weber River and the Union Pacific Rail Line in Weber Canyon,” Shaw said. “The bridges are located near milepost 91, just west of the Weber Canyon rest area. A new eastbound bridge will be constructed immediately to the south of the existing bridges. Once complete, the new eastbound bridge will accommodate all traffic while the existing structures are removed, and the westbound bridge is constructed.”

Starting at $4.32/week.
