ROY — The Utah State Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services, or DABS, is once again expanding its presence in Weber County with a new state liquor and wine store under construction in west Roy.
The new, 12,162-square-foot facility, which is being built on a lot in the area of 3650 W. 5600 South, is currently slated for a late fall opening, according to Michelle Schmitt, the DABS’ director of communications and external affairs.
The Roy development follows the construction of a liquor store in Marriott-Slaterville at 1115 W. 12th St. As with other recent builds, the revamped Roy facility will include features not present in older stores, including refrigeration for cold, ready-to-drink beverages. The store will also have a “Proudly Utah” section, where patrons can pick up beverages from local makers.
Schmitt told the Standard-Examiner that the new location was chosen due to its proximity to main thoroughfares and its complement to area businesses. She also noted that state liquor stores aren’t built solely for the benefit of people who drink, as the revenue they generate is funneled into programs that benefit residents at large.
“Last year, the DABS provided $218.34 million to state programs and local communities. This pays for things like police and public safety, roads and transportation, education and public health. There are also dedicated funding streams directed towards school lunches and underage drinking prevention,” Schmitt explained via email. “Additionally, the DABS plays a big role in supporting Utah’s hospitality food and beverage industry. Our department oversees alcohol licensing for every establishment that sells alcohol. These businesses are vital to Utah’s culture, state and local economies and our thriving tourism industry.”
Last month, stores also completed a statewide winter donation drive for people and pets in need. Beneficiary organizations were handpicked by individual stores.
“The donation drive was a big success supporting local charities and the people they serve,” Schmitt wrote. “The DABS is so proud of store employees for their dedication and commitment to the annual donation drive that gives back to the communities where they live.”
