Rescue crews attempt to remove a vehicle from the Ogden River after it crashed in Ogden Canyon on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025. The driver, who reportedly sustained minor injuries, was able to get out of the vehicle safely before it sunk further into the river. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was cited for impaired driving.

A driver ended up with minor injuries and a citation for impaired driving following a crash in Ogden Canyon on Thursday night.

Utah Department of Public Safety spokesman Lt. Cameron Roden told the Standard-Examiner on Friday that the accident occurred around 7:08 p.m. on state Route 39 about 3 miles into the canyon near Bridge Canyon Road when a GMC Sierra that was traveling through the canyon lost control and crashed into the Ogden River below.

“The driver, luckily, was not in the water,” Roden said. “Injuries were not severe — just minor injuries. The driver was transported to the hospital.”

According to Roden, state troopers suspected impairment and, after an investigation, the driver was cited for driving while impaired.

Multiple minor crashes had been reported in the same area earlier Thursday, which saw snow and rain throughout the day, and that conditions were still wet in the evening. However, Roden said impairment is believed to be the main factor in this crash.

“The weather conditions are bad enough and adding the impairment on top of it, it can be very, very dangerous,” he said. “I just want to remind drivers again that there’s some options to arrange a sober ride. If you’re out and have had anything to drink, don’t drink and drive with the road conditions that can be out there.”
