PROMONTORY — Despite an explosion that led to the total loss of a building at the Northrop Grumman complex near Promontory last week, the company said work on solid rocket motor projects will not be adversely impacted.

On Friday, Northrop Grumman released a statement to the Standard-Examiner through a spokesperson with some additional information about the explosion, which occurred around 7:38 a.m. Wednesday.

“We are actively working to determine the cause of an incident involving one of our buildings at our Promontory, Utah facility that occurred on April 16,” the company said. “All employees working in or near the building are safe with no significant injuries. Employees were working in and near the building at the time of the incident and all evacuated safely.”

The company noted that the building involved in the explosion was used to produce an ingredient involved in the production of solid rocket motor propellant and is one of several in the production network serving this purpose.

Northrop Grumman added that the incident will not impact progress on any ongoing company programs, operations or solid rocket motor production and that no solid rocket motors were lost or damaged in the explosion.

“The Promontory site is one of several across the country that support the company’s solid rocket motor production and testing,” the company said. “Promontory itself is a large property with over 800 buildings and nearly 20,000 acres of land. The company continues to add additional solid rocket motor capacity for future customer needs and remains committed to delivering the most capable, reliable and valuable products to our customers.”

The statement also noted that the company has several protocols in place to keep employees safe.

“Our employees are our greatest asset and their safety is our top priority,” the statement continued. “Our protocols, which are under near constant review — both internally as well as by peer organizations and on-site government entities — proved to keep employees safe in this unfortunate event.”

The investigation into the cause of last week’s incident remains ongoing.
