Matthew Lefthand of Marriott-Slaterville trains for setting the Guinness world record for "greatest virtual distance on a static cycle in 24 hours (male)" in this undated photo. Lefthand will make the attempt Saturday and Sunday, April 19-20, 2025, in Ogden.

Matthew Lefthand, a therapist from Marriott-Slaterville, only got into cycling just over two and a half years ago.

This weekend, he aims to set a Guinness world record.

“I’m attempting a 24-hour virtual cycling record, which will be an attempt to go the furthest anyone has gone on a virtual cycling platform,” he said. “Last year I got into ultra racing. This year, I really got into it and had some really good results. I spend a lot of my time virtual training because it’s really convenient — having a family and a job and everything — to not have to go out of the house and be able to train inside, so I have a lot of familiarity with indoor riding, and over the winter I realized if I were to do a good effort, I had a good chance at breaking the world record for 24 hours.”

Lefthand is no stranger to flirting with cycling records. In February, he set the 24-hour ultra-cycling record for an American in a 24-hour, nondrifting race by cycling 576 miles during Bike Sebring 2025 in Florida.

The official record Lefthand is aiming for this weekend is the “Greatest virtual distance on a static cycle in 24 hours (male).” The current record was set by Canadian Ed Veal and shared with Splunk Inc. in Las Vegas in 2019. The record stands at 952.12 km (591.62 miles). Lefthand will attempt the record at the Enve Composites headquarters, located at 508 W. Stockman Way in Ogden, starting at 6 a.m. Saturday through 6 a.m. Sunday.

“If people are local in Ogden, Utah, they are also welcome to come to Enve headquarters here in Ogden,” he said. “I have to be in a public place to do the record, so Enve’s been gracious enough to host me. We’ll have the live podcast there. We’ll have me on the bike. We’ll potentially have different refreshments throughout the day and sponsors there. Cyclists can also come and hop on the bikes that we’ll have set up next to me and they can join me in the virtual world getting some miles with me as I go for my attempt.”

Enve will be open to the public throughout the entirety of Lefthand’s world record attempt.

He added there are many other steps necessary to make an attempt at the world record, including having his computers verified by the manufacturer, have witnesses on site all day, recording the entirety of his attempt, and having people fill out logbooks.

For those who can’t attend, Lefthand said there will also be livestreaming options.

“There will also be a livestream on my YouTube channel that they can jump in and follow along live from anywhere,” he said. “That livestream — just because I’m going to be sitting on my bike for 24 hours is not very exciting — we’ve gone to lengths to make it more interactive. We have some hosts that are going to bring on people and interview them. We have different cyclists and community members that are going to come on and talk about different aspects of cycling, the attempt itself or just talk about themselves as well. These are people that I train with or know. Some are from around the world, some are champion cyclists themselves.”

However, he said that he’s also making this attempt for a much bigger purpose as well.

“I am also riding to raise money for breast cancer awareness,” he said. “My own mother started treatment for breast cancer several weeks ago — Stage 3 breast cancer — so I’m raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation through Tiltify, which will be connected to the livestream. And I also have a GoFundMe set up for my mom directly.”

Lefthand said Drip-Swag of Layton is donating T-shirts to be given away to those who donate $50 or more.

He added that it’s an exciting time for him.

“I never thought that I would be going for a world record for anything, much less, cycling,” he said. “If you would’ve told me that three or four years ago, I would think that you’re crazy. To be here really demonstrates to me that you never know what you’re capable of. I’m a mental health therapist by training and that’s what I do for my day job, so I know the power of the mind, and I know that if you put your mind to something, you can accomplish amazing things.”
