WEST HAVEN — A Friday morning shooting incident involving officers from the Ogden Metro Gang Taskforce that left a robbery suspect dead and an officer injured is going through the normal channels of investigation.
On Friday morning, Ogden Chief of Police Jake Sube briefed the press on the incident.
“Just after 2 a.m. this morning, members of the Ogden Metro Gang Taskforce were involved in an officer-involved shooting at Motel 6 located at 1206 W 21st Street — that’s in West Haven,” he said.
He added that the Ogden Metro Gang Taskforce is a multi-jurisdictional unit comprised of officers from multiple jurisdictions that serve the entirety of Weber County.
“The incident occurred during an operation to apprehend the suspect wanted in connection with an aggravated robbery that took place three days earlier during which an individual was robbed at gunpoint,” he said. “The suspect is a known white supremacist gang member with an extensive criminal history.”
Sube said as officers approached, the suspect fled on foot and produced a firearm during the brief foot pursuit.
“In response, two members of the Gang Taskforce discharged their weapons, striking the suspect,” he said. “He sustained fatal injuries and was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital.”
The suspect has not been identified at this time.
Sube added that one member of the Ogden Metro Gang Taskforce received a gunshot wound to the lower leg.
“While the injury is significant, thankfully, it is non-life threatening and the officer has been released from the hospital,” he said.
He said the Weber County Attorney’s Office’s Critical Incident Team has initiated a separate and independent investigation into the incident and that the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave as is protocol in these situations.
“On behalf of the Ogden Police Department and the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, we stand in support of our officers,” he said. “They operate in difficult and dangerous circumstances and consistently put themselves in harm’s way to protect our community.”
No further information was released at Friday morning’s press conference, though Sube did say additional information with be released in the coming days.
