Equipment is being mustered at the 12th Street railroad crossing — seen Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2024 — for work that will close all lanes of traffic over the crossing this weekend.

OGDEN — Navigation around the north side of town will be a little more challenging this weekend.

In a post on X, the Utah Department of Transportation announced that all lanes of 12th Street where it crosses the Union Pacific Railroad will be closed over the weekend, starting at 9 p.m. Friday and reopening at 5 a.m. Monday

UDOT Senior Communications Manager Mitch Shaw told the Standard-Examiner the work is meant for repairs to the crossing structure.

“Union Pacific is revamping the rail crossing there and we are repairing some of the concrete panels in the area,” he said in an email.

Shaw added that the closure only extends to the crossing itself and will not impact entrances to nearby businesses or streets such as Stewart Drive and Century Drive.

At the beginning of the month, Union Pacific and the Utah Transit Authority announced the lifting of quiet zones along the Ogden-Provo corridor and that cities would have to reapply for the status or make certain fixes to railroad crossings in their jurisdiction. However, Shaw said that the work set for this weekend on the 12th Street crossing is unrelated and was planned before that announcement was made.

Shaw said 400 North in Marriott-Slaterville and 21st Street in Ogden lead to the closest alternate Interstate 15 interchanges.
