Ogden to host national figure skating sectional at the Ice Sheet
Ogden will play host to one of figure skating’s major sectionals next week.
The Pacific Coast Sectional Final for the U.S. singles skating circuit takes place Wednesday, Nov. 13, through Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Weber County Ice Sheet. The event is one of three sectionals to determine who qualifies to compete at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in January 2025.
“Ogden is honored to host the Pacific Coast Finals and welcome athletes, families and skating fans to our community,” said Rachelle Rose, Wasatch Figure Skating Club President, in a news release. “Our city is known for its western heritage and we are thrilled to showcase our unique culture while supporting these talented skaters on their path to greatness.”
Up to 150 skaters from youth to elite levels will take the ice including Ogden native Kai Kovar, who will compete in the senior men category from which Olympic and International Grand Prix athletes are chosen. Kovar, from Wasatch Figure Skating Club, has represented the United States at international competitions in previous years.
Senior-level skaters compete on Friday and Saturday.
Another WFSC competitor skates at the sectional level for the first time in Emelyn Cobb, competing in the juvenile girls group on Wednesday morning.
The competition will also include Starr Andrews, the first Black U.S. figure skater to medal at the international grand prix. The senior woman competitor placed fourth at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 2023.
Tickets are available at TicketLeap.com, starting as low as $20 per day or $60 for all four days on pre-sale.
