OGDEN — More than 100 years of Ogden history will come to life at a special ceremony this week.

According to a press release from Ogden City, Union Station will host a cornerstone ceremony Friday to open a time capsule that was placed in the station a century ago.

“Marking 100 years to the day it was placed, this time capsule will be revealed to the public for the first time since it was placed in 1924,” the release said. “The time capsule was placed when the current Ogden Union Station was beginning construction. Museum staff, historians, and other representatives will be opening the capsule and discussing the contents live that evening.”

The release adds that it won’t just be this specific station’s history that will be recognized at the event.

“The time capsule was placed on May 31, 1924 during the building of the current Union Station building. It also contains contents from the earlier Union Station building’s 1888 time capsule, which was rescued from the building after it was destroyed by fire. Museum staff anticipate contents including photographs, newspapers, business records, and railroad documents.”

The free event is open to the public with the following schedule:

  • 5 p.m.: A reception and excavation of the cornerstone by Abstract Masonry.
  • 6 p.m.: A cornerstone ceremony, featuring the removal of the time capsule, speakers from the Museums at Union Station and the Masons of Utah, and poems from Ogden’s poet laureate.
  • 7 p.m.: The time capsule reveal, with discussion by local historians, representatives from the Masons of Utah and Ogden Mayor Ben Nadolski.
  • 8:30 p.m.: A viewing of time capsule artifacts by the public. Guests will have the opportunity to examine the time capsule’s contents following the initial reveal, the press release states.
