A pile of snow sits on Fremont High's baseball field as Fremont hosts Syracuse in a high school baseball game on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.

SALT LAKE CITY — Ditch the shovels and pull out the garden hose.

Spring-like weather will be here in just a few days.

“After Thursday, we’re going to have a very steady warming trend,” said Monica Traphagan, senior meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City. “In fact, this weekend, we’ll have temperatures anywhere from the mid-60s to around 70, which is above normal for this time of year.”

The typical temperature for this time of year is in the 50s, Traphagan said, far from the heavy snowstorms felt across Northern Utah this weekend. A winter storm warning remained in effect until Wednesday morning.

The Utah Avalanche Center also issued a high avalanche warning for Northern Utah this week, stating that recent heavy accumulations of snow and drifting have created widespread areas of unstable snow.

This year’s snowpack is the highest it’s been since the 1930s when the state began keeping track, according to the Utah Division of Water Resources. As of Tuesday, Utah reached 29.4 inches of snow water, breaking the 1951-52 record of 28.8 inches. The 30-year normal is about 15.8 inches.

Traphagen said that while flooding can happen anywhere in the state, people should be especially vigilant of potential water dangers if they plan to travel to Southern Utah over the holiday weekend.

“The water is treacherous. We’ve already had one rescue at Buckskin Gulch,” she said. “People need to be very aware and very careful.”
