Fremont High alum Massingill becomes Dallas Cowboys cheerleader

By Ryan Comer, Standard-Examiner Staff - | Aug 19, 2016

Friday night wasn’t just the first football game for the Fremont High football team, it was the first NFL game for new Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and Fremont alum Madeline Massingill.

The Cowboys hosted the Miami Dolphins in a preseason game.

“I was good until this morning and then I definitely had a breakdown,” said Massingill’s morther, Misty Robbins, who was reached by phone just before the game’s kickoff.

“It’s been extremely emotional, besides physically, emotionally and financially exhausting for us, but it was worth every penny.”

Massingill tried out for the team a year ago but was eventually cut. Her journey was documented on the reality television show “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team.”

Robbins acknowledged her skepticism when when first learning her daughter wanted to try out a second time because her friends saw the first attempt on TV.

“It was really hard for her to get knocked down in front of her peers,” she said.

The cut served as motivation.

“She made some adjustments, fixed some things that they asked her to fix and got a little more experience,” Robbins said. “And I think … she doesn’t like to be told no. She wanted to prove that she deserved to be here.”

Massingill’s accomplishment is particularly meaningful for her father, Dave Massingill, who grew up a Cowboys fan in West Texas and said the tryout process this year had a “completely different feeling to it” compared to last year.

“She was more herself, more relaxed … not as stressed as her first year,” he said.

Madeline Massingill’s journey to becoming a Cowboys cheerleader can be seen on the 11th season of “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team,” which airs on Country Music Television starting Aug. 25.
