Iconic Ogden water tower getting a facelift
OGDEN — An Ogden landmark that also serves as the face of the city’s biggest business park is getting a cosmetic overhaul.
Boyer Business Depot Ogden Project Manager Aaron Austad said crews from the St. George-based Pro Tower Painters are prepping the iconic BDO tower for a new paint job, a task that should be completed in about a week.
“Right now, they’re doing the power-washing and prepping it for the new paint,” Austad said. “We haven’t painted it since 1999, so it was due.”
The six-legged tower stands 18 stories high and sits near the northeast entrance of the BDO, just off of 2nd Street several blocks west of Wall Avenue. It was built in the 1940s as part of Defense Depot Ogden, the former military installation that was shut down as part of the the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Act.
According to the BDO, the tower stands 185 feet high and can hold 250,000 gallons of water, although it hasn’t been used for water storage since its DDO days.
Austad said for years the tower was painted in a red and white checkered pattern, but when Ogden City and the Boyer Co. took over the military center, it was repainted to reflect the rebranding of the center.
While it’s no longer operational, Austad said the tower serves as the distinguishing symbol of the center. A stylized version of the tower is part of the BDO’s logo, an image that appears on most of the buildings within the depot.
“It’s kind of one of those things that’s instantly recognizable,” he said. “It’s one of the first things people notice when they come (into the BDO).”
