Centerville Elementary students cast ballots in mock election

By Anna Burleson, Standard-Examiner Staff - | Nov 8, 2016

CENTERVILLE — Whether it was because they had a favorite candidate or simply didn’t want to pick Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, the students of Centerville Elementary School all cast their votes in a mock election Tuesday morning.

The event was put together by second-grade teacher Aleasa Anderson who did it because it was something she remembered from her own time in elementary school.

Story continues below video.

“I just thought it would be a neat thing to do with the kids at the school, so I told my principal I had this idea, and he let me run with it,” she said.

Anderson said the students looked forward to voting, and some discussed the pros and cons of each candidate in class.

“They get so fired up, it’s ‘Trump this! Clinton that!'” Anderson said, laughing.

As of about 2 p.m., the results of the mock election were provided to the Standard-Examiner by Principal Dan Hansen.

  • Evan McMullin — 123 votes, 31 percent
  • Donald Trump — 103 votes, 26 percent
  • Hillary Clinton — 75 votes, 19 percent
  • Jill Stein — 49 votes, 13 percent
  • Gary Johnson — 41 votes, 10 percent

Four write-in votes were also cast for Mitt Romney, Casper, Alyssa and Peter Norton (a parent of a student at the school).

The following are short interviews with some students at the polls. The answers are verbatim.

Jacob Bigler, 2nd grade

Vote: Donald Trump

“Because I like ducks.”

Maddie Lange, 5th grade

Vote: Jill Stein

“I care about the environment, and she wants to help the environment and make it better.”

Tyler Schultz, 6th grade

Gwenyth Morris, 4th grade

“I don’t know. No one else was that good.”

Ella Dimick, 3rd grade

Vote: Donald Trump

“I heard something about he was going to build a wall between Mexico and the United States because I thought it would be safer because sometimes Mexicans aren’t the best people, so that’s why I voted for Donald Trump.”

Shawn Cobrand, 3rd grade

Vote: Hillary Clinton

“I think I heard Donald Trump he keeps stealing money, and I think he said he doesn’t like black people, and I’m half white and half black.”

Lizzie Denson, 4th grade

Vote: Jill Stein

“First reason is she’s a girl, and second reason I think it was a good choice, and the third reason is I think she’s the best choice. She’s ready.”

Canaleah Lawson, 4th grade

Vote: Hilary Clinton

“She wants to make a program for the Mexicans to have a chance to be kind.”

Lawrynn Jackson, 4th grade

Vote: Gary Johnson.

“I voted for Gary Johnson because he seems like a nice guy, and everybody says he said drugs are OK, but people have the choice to do it.”

Vance Moser, 4th grade

Vote: Gary Johnson

“He’s never going to win because he lets people take drugs. I wanted him to feel how stupid he is. Nobody votes for him.”

Samantha Clinger, 6th grade

Vote: Hilary Clinton

“I really only know about Hilary and Donald and when we were studying them I liked Hilary more.”

Breezy Hayman, 6th grade

Vote: Hilary Clinton

“I thought she had really good ideas that would help our country and that she already knows and been with other people in other countries so I think she’d be a good pick.”

Emerald Clayton, 6th grade

“Because I didn’t want to vote for Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.”

Patrick Neal, 6th grade

Vote: Evan McMullin

“Just because I didn’t like any of the other candidates.”

Hayden Marty, 6th grade

Vote: Donald Trump

“Because he’s amazing. Because he’s going to kill ISIS and start taxing China because they’re pretty much taking money from the U.S.”

Camden Chavez, 6th grade

Vote: Donald Trump

“Because he’s given us so many good memes and SNLs.”

Austin Dunn, 6th grade

Vote; Donald Trump

“He’s going to build a wall and we won’t be killed by ISIS if we vote for him because if we vote for Hillary Clinton she just told ISIS how to kill us.”

Emily West, 6th grade

Vote: Evan McMullin

“He’s better than the other candidates. The others don’t really have good insights or political things.”

James Scott, 6th grade

Vote: Evan McMullin

“Honestly I think he was the best choice because Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, I don’t agree with their points of view. They’ve had personal issues and character flaws in the past so I decided Evan McMullin would be the best choice.”

Oscar Auer, 5th grade

Vote: Donald Trump

“He knows all his stuff.”

Naomi Brice, 5th grade

Vote: Jill Stein

“Her main focus is on the environment and I think we need to work on our environment problems.”
