OGDEN — Members of the Ogden-Weber Chamber of Commerce joined mortuary staff and members of the public for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Myers Mortuary’s Ogden funeral home, located at 845 Washington Blvd., on Tuesday.

Phased renovation work, including the addition of a new mural in the facility’s chapel, was completed in recent weeks. The 11-by-16-foot mural was painted by artist Kirk Larsen over four-plus months, according to mortuary president and owner Shaun Myers.

Larsen has now painted four murals for Myers Mortuary; three at the Ogden location and one in Brigham City.

“We just really love the work that he does,” Myers told the Standard-Examiner, spotlighting his work for Ogden’s George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park. “I did a lot of investigative work in 2009 just looking around for mural artists. I contacted several of my artist friends and he was referred several times.”

The newest mural depicts a woodland nature scene illuminated by the sun.

“Some people have told me that they feel like the sun that you see off in the background in that mural is like the sun setting, which is kind of symbolic of funeral services,” Myers said. “Other people say it looks like the sun is rising.”

In any case, it helps foster a bright and welcoming atmosphere in which families can honor their loved ones. To that end, several other upgrades were made at the facility, which was built in 1961.

Renovations include new ceiling beams and decorative moldings, the removal of walls, a new audio-visual system, upgraded lighting, new flooring/carpeting, new wall paneling, a fresh coat of paint and more.

Brightening and refreshing the look of the chapel and the building’s front were of particular importance to Myers, given their importance to the funeral service.

“We wanted it just to have a new facelift, especially across the front of our building, which is certainly a focal point of our chapel” Myers said. “It’s the most important place because, during funeral services, that’s where the casket is placed.”

Redesigning the building’s interior was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by local designer Cary Allred.

“Just an outstanding individual who allowed us to be part of the whole process, including the install, and participating in many, many of the decisions,” Christina Myers, the mortuary’s outreach director, said of Allred.

Both Shaun and Christina Myers noted that the murals on site and the warm green colors used in some of the facility’s décor are meant to reflect nature and the cycle of life, concepts that hearken back to the latter’s upbringing outside of the U.S.

“I was born and raised in Sweden and love the forests there, of course, and running on the trails and enjoying the nature,” Christina Myers said. “(Larsen’s mural) is very reminiscent of the forest lands in Sweden.”

Meanwhile, Shaun Myers added that the remodeled Ogden funeral home will aid in the mortuary’s greater mission of serving the local community.

“We have a model that we’ve followed for many, many years and that is the golden rule,” he said. “We feel like that’s an important part of the Myers history where we just want to serve people to the best of our ability. … There’s no greater honor for us than to have the privilege of helping to guide a family through this type of event.”

Myers Mortuary has funeral homes in Ogden, Roy, Layton and Brigham City, which offer funeral, burial and cremation services, in addition to Myers Evergreen Memorial Park (also in Ogden).

Starting at $4.32/week.
