When a restaurant opens a second location, it’s usually across town or in a different city. But All About Tacos opened its second location on Historic 25th Street just a couple of blocks away from its first spot at 2421 Kiesel Ave.
The owners hope to attract more Ogden locals by having a presence on 25th Street with its many restaurants, shops and community events.
“Not many Ogden locals know our first place exists, it’s kind of a hidden restaurant,” said Kaleb Kidman, who co-owns the tacquerias with his wife, Jenny Kidman, and her parents, Gerardo Guzman and Jenny Orosorio. “We would get people who are attending events at the Ogden Eccles Theater and employees who work in the area coming for lunch. But our evenings and Friday and Saturday nights were slower. So we’re hoping to fill that gap.”
The second spot, located at 109 25th St., is a bit smaller. So if people need more seating, “they can come over to the first restaurant as a different option,” Kidman said.
The original All About Tacos opened in December 2022. What sets it apart from Utah’s hundreds of other Mexican restaurants is that the sirloin steak and pork are slow-cooked on a vertical rotating spindle, called a trompo, “until the meat gets a nice caramelization on the outside,” Kidman said.
Then the seasoned meat is sliced off the trompo and tucked into tacos or burritos. The trompo cooking method is similar to the Greek gyro, the Arabian shawarma or Turkish doner kebab. However, it’s an authentic Mexican cooking method Guzman and Osorio experienced while in Veracruz, Mexico.
The restaurant’s signature Black Al Pastor tacos use pork cooked on the rotating trompo. The dark color come from a marinade made with blackened chiles. Also known as “al pastor negro,” the tacos come with fresh pineapple. The “al pastor rojo” tacos have a red chile marinade.
The Loaded Street Dog is a signature item that’s only on the 25th Street menu (but you can still ask for it at the Kiesel location). It’s an all-beef hot dog wrapped in bacon and topped with grilled veggies, your choice of taco meat, onions and cilantro.
“You’ll see something like it offered on food vendor carts, but you don’t see it very often in restaurants,” Kidman said. “It’s an elevated hot dog. When people try it, they really like it.”
Another 25th Street menu item is the Surf & Turf burrito, which features sirloin, shrimp and chipotle aioli sauce.
Both restaurants have a condiment bar so customers can add their own salsa and sauces. Both locations also offer a weekly Taco Tuesday special for $1.50.
The Guzman/Kidman family initially opened La Crepe OG in 2020, also on Kiesel Avenue. “We sold it about a year ago to fund the taco concept,” Kidman said.
They are aren’t stopping at two locations. A third All About Tacos is in the works for West Haven, Kidman said, but it’s several months out.
Despite the rumblings of a possible economic recession due to federal layoffs and tariffs, Kidman said their expansion is less risky than higher-end restaurants.
“People may not be able to afford to go out to Ruth’s Chris for a steak, but they can still go out for tacos and have a nice time,” Kidman said.
The new All About Tacos had a “soft” opening the first week of March, “So we were able to get some practice in the kitchen,” Kidman said. “During our grand opening on March 7, it was a solid line from the moment we opened until closing. All our regulars came, and we sold out every meat we had.”
