WEST HAVEN — A restroom fire at West Haven Elementary, located at 4385 S. 3900 West in Weber County, resulted in an evacuation and the cancellation of school Tuesday morning.

According to Weber School District Community Relations Specialist Lane Findlay, the school’s fire alarm was activated at about 8:09 a.m. after a fire was ignited in a main-hallway restroom.

Findlay told the Standard-Examiner that the fire was largely extinguished by the time fire units arrived on scene and no injuries were reported. However, there was damage to parts of the building from the school’s fire sprinkler system, as well as smoke damage.

“We had a considerable amount of water in the hallway, into the commons area and then quite a bit of smoke inside the building from the fire,” Findlay said.

Although the fire occurred before the start of school, some students were in the building as West Haven offers breakfast in the cafeteria.

Students were evacuated to a nearby meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where they were reunited with parents or authorized guardians.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office. Meanwhile, the Weber County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the possible involvement of a student.

“We have identified a student who went into the bathroom and, we believe, started that fire intentionally, and that is under investigation,” Findlay said.

Despite the damage that occurred and the cancellation of school Tuesday, Findlay noted that school would be in session as normal on Wednesday.

Findlay added that the timing of the fire was challenging where evacuation and reunification were concerned, but that all systems operated as intended, including fire suppression.

“Everything worked exactly how it was designed to,” Findlay said. “And then Weber Fire was there very quickly to finish putting out the blaze.”
