ROY — The Roy Police Department has determined that a report regarding a possible abduction over the weekend was made mistakenly and the incident was a misunderstanding.

Concerns were raised within the community after police released a notice regarding a possible child abduction/suspicious circumstances in the area of 2500 W. 4950 South on Sunday afternoon in Roy. According to the release, at about 3:29 p.m., a witness reported seeing a black four-door SUV pull up to a 12- to 13-year-old juvenile male walking on the sidewalk. An adult male reportedly got out of the SUV, made contact with the juvenile, then “forced him into the vehicle and left the area in an unknown direction.”

The release sparked a flurry of activity and citizen comments on social media. However, a subsequent investigation confirmed that no abduction or crime had occurred, according to an update provided by police via Facebook at around 7 p.m.

“The witness account, although intended to be helpful, was not an accurate account of the overall situation,” the update read. “The vehicle, juvenile and parent were both located and investigation into the incident revealed there was no altercation or danger to the juvenile.”

Lt. Stu Hackworth of the Roy Police Department explained to the Standard-Examiner that a “younger individual” had witnessed the incident and relayed what they thought they had seen to a grandparent who, in turn, made the initial report to police.

“When we ended up locating the vehicle, the juvenile and the family members that he was actually with — (we determined) they were going to the park, he was running ahead of everybody, the car pulled up, dad got out and he got in the car,” Hackworth said. “Basically, that’s what happened.”

In the wake of the incident, police offered thanks to the community “for their outreach and assistance.”
