OGDEN — The new Marshall N. White Community Center is nearing its spring completion and city officials are looking ahead to the day it opens. On Friday, members of the City Council and other city staff had an opportunity to tour the facility, which remains under construction.

Ogden City Communications Director Mike McBride said the 68,000-square-foot facility is making good time.

“The target opening day is May 6. To date, there hasn’t been any real hiccups in the project to speak of and they’re moving along as planned,” he said.

McBride lauded the headway that’s been made recently.

“I toured the facility just four weeks ago and there was still dirt floors and open windows and it wasn’t quite dried-in at the time,” he said. “To come in here four weeks later, seeing the progress is amazing.”

The $34 million facility, which replaces the 1968-built center, will have several amenities — both indoor and outdoor — including sports fields, a playground, a pool, a gym, classrooms and several other spaces. Programming will include fitness classes, swimming lessons, cooking classes, youth programming and more.

McBride said the lack of snags in construction that have plagued other major projects across the country is a testament to the entities building the new community center.

“It’s not unusual for projects to get sidetracked a little bit and maybe fall behind, but this one was well-planned,” he said. “BHI did a fantastic job, VSBO, of course, the designer along the way, did a great job with the vision for this. BHI really has done an incredible job keeping the project on time. We’re fortunate that the supply chain has been reliable. It’s exactly as planned.”

He said with construction coming close to wrapping up, officials are planning for a big celebration to bring the new facility online.

“There’s going to be a grand celebration for the opening,” he said. “Right now, they’re getting the software organized for memberships and reservations and everything that’s programming-related inside of the building. Really, it’s going to be a well-rounded out program for youth and adults and beyond. It truly is a facility that has something for everyone.”

Starting at $4.32/week.
