DAVIS COUNTY — Two men are dead after being hit by vehicles in collisions occurring in Layton and on Interstate 15 near Clearfield, respectively, Wednesday night.

A 41-year-old Layton man was struck and killed by a white cargo van just after 8 p.m. while attempting to cross Main Street at 1120 North, according to a release from the Layton City Police Department. It was noted that the man was not in a designated crosswalk when struck by the northbound vehicle.

The van driver reportedly did not stop after the fatal collision, but police have released still images of the vehicle in question from footage captured by area cameras. Police described the van as “older” with “a distinct single window on the passenger-side sliding door.” Per the release, the van sustained “substantial front end damage” to the hood, grill and passenger-side headlight.

Lt. Travis Lyman of Layton City PD told the Standard-Examiner Thursday morning that officers were canvassing the area to see if any other footage of the collision or the involved vehicle exists. He added that the victim’s identity would not be released, as investigators were working on notifying the deceased man’s next of kin.

Police are requesting public assistance in identifying the van/driver and providing information relevant to the case. Layton City PD can be reached via phone at 801-497-8300.

Elsewhere, a 35-year-old man who had gotten out of his truck on southbound I-15 was also struck and killed near milepost 335 Wednesday night. A release from the Utah Highway Patrol stated that there was a possibility the victim was attempting to change his left rear wheel at the time of the collision.

According to UHP, the man had stopped a blue Chevy Silverado in the HOV lane and was standing between the truck and the concrete barrier.

“It was dark and traffic was approaching the Silverado at freeway speeds,” the release stated.

“A silver Malibu was in the HOV lane and had another vehicle ahead of it swerve the last second to the right. The driver of the Malibu swerved to the left, clipped the rear of the Silverado, struck the pedestrian (35 yr old driver) and crashed along the concrete wall,” the release stated.

The victim — and sole occupant of the Silverado — was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the 25-year-old male driver of the Malibu and a male passenger sustained “minor injuries” in the crash.
