ROY — A mother and her adult son are dead as a result of a fast-moving fire at their home in Roy on Thursday morning.

Authorities, including Roy City Fire & Rescue and officers from the Roy City Police Department, responded to a fire at the Monte Vista Mobile Home Park located in the area of 3800 S. 1900 West at approximately 11:40 a.m. Thursday.

“I believe our police department got there first, and they had heavy fire and smoke showing on the porch area,” Roy City Fire Chief Theron Williams told the Standard-Examiner.

Williams said that officers made efforts to remove the victims from the home, including breaking glass from the outside. However, rescue attempts proved unsuccessful. He added that the officers incurred minor injuries.

“Mobile homes are hard because they spread so quickly. It’s a lightweight construction,” Williams said. “Within three to five minutes, you could have a fully-involved structure. So, these trailer homes are really dangerous. … the lightweight construction, the materials that are in the home, the furnishings make this a fire where the individuals didn’t have much time.”

It took “30 to 45 minutes” for firefighters to contain the blaze, per Williams, who indicated that no other homes were damaged.

Although the victims’ identities have been confirmed, they aren’t being released at this time. An investigation to determine the cause of the fire is ongoing and will be conducted by Roy City Fire and the Utah State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Williams noted that “about 40 firefighters” were involved in the operation. Participating agencies included Roy City Fire, Ogden City Fire, Riverdale City Fire, Weber Fire and Hill Air Force Base Fire & Emergency.
