Ruth Brockman and Dr. Johnnie Cook discuss the history of the Seager Memorial Clinic in Ogden on Friday, Sept. 28, 2018. The clinic operates out of the Ogden Rescue Mission.

OGDEN — A local free health clinic is one of 10 in the country to receive a grant for $10,000.

Seager Memorial Clinic received the grant money from Family Medicine Cares USA and will use the money to help purchase medical equipment to boost primary care from a patient’s diagnosis through treatment.

“Seager Memorial Clinic has seen a great demand for free medical and dental care in Northern Utah,” said Executive Director Jerika Mays.

Mays said the clinic, which is open six hours per week, provided medical care to nearly 1,300 patients in 2021 and nearly doubled that total in 2023.

“And we are on track to exceed that number in 2024,” Mays said. “The Family Medicine Cares USA grant will allow us to continue our mission of providing free, easy access, nonjudgemental charitable medical, dental, vision and mental health care to the underserved.”

By providing grants, Family Medicine Cares USA is able to help provide medical care to new and existing free clinics across the country. Some of the most needed items include exam tables, medical equipment and electronic health record systems.

In 2024, the organization, which serves as a philanthropic arm of the American Academy of Family Physicians, has awarded over $2.1 million to 131 clinics in 38 states and one U.S territory.

“Free clinics can greatly improve access to care for underserved populations who often fall through the cracks of our health care system and are essential in closing equity gaps and addressing health disparities,” said Dr. Tomás Owens, president of the AAFP Foundation’s board of trustees. “As we navigate a changing health care landscape, we are incredibly grateful to our donors who support the Family Medicine Cares USA program, which helps clinic care for patients without the safety net of insurance.”

The clinic is located in the Ogden Rescue Mission, 2775 Wall Ave. The general clinic is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3-5 p.m.

The adult eye clinic, located at 555 E. 24th St., is held once a month on a Thursday. Those interested can visit seagerclinic.org to see times and dates, or call 801-528-2396 for additional services.

Starting at $4.32/week.
