Sunday Drive: Exciting new cars take center stage at Utah International Auto Expo
The Utah International Auto Expo revved into action Friday at the Mountain America Exposition Center in Sandy. As the new year begins, it’s the perfect opportunity to explore what’s fresh and exciting in the automotive world. We were fortunate to get an early sneak peek Friday morning and experience some groundbreaking vehicles up close.
One of the showstoppers this year is the all-new Dodge Charger Daytona. This isn’t just another muscle car — it’s the first all-electric muscle car from any of the “Big Three” U.S. automakers. Dodge describes it as the car that will save the planet “from all those lame, soulless, weak-looking, self-driving sleep pods.” This bold proclamation comes with performance to match: 670 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque that launches the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds. For enthusiasts worried about losing the signature muscle car roar, Dodge includes a faux sound generator, creating a unique and thrilling auditory experience.
On the electric front, Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz is a nod to nostalgia with a futuristic twist. The iconic VW microbus has been reimagined as an all-electric vehicle. With its spacious interior and family-friendly design, this could be the ultimate soccer mom’s ride. Offering a range of 231 miles and 335 horsepower, the ID. Buzz combines practicality with cool retro vibes.
Toyota continues its hybrid leadership with the all-new sixth-generation 4Runner. Powered by an i-Force Max 2.4-liter turbocharged hybrid engine, this SUV delivers 326 combined horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Fans of past 4Runner models will love the return of the roll-down rear window and wrap-over quarter glass. Deanne especially appreciated the convenience of the roll-down window for quick access to the cargo area.
Also catching our eye in the Toyota booth were the new Land Cruiser and Corolla GR, two standout models we’ve driven before and highly recommend checking out.
Over at Nissan, the all-new Kicks takes center stage with bold styling, enhanced technology and — for the first time — available all-wheel drive, making it a practical option for Utah drivers. The revamped Kicks boasts a completely digital dashboard and an available 12.3-inch touch screen, elevating the driving experience.
Looking ahead, Nissan is gearing up to release the next-generation Armada for the 2025 model year. The new Armada features a twin-turbo, 3.5-liter V-6 engine, delivering 425 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, paired with a nine-speed transmission. With a towing capacity of 8,500 pounds and an upgraded interior featuring dual 12.3-inch displays (and an optional 14.3-inch infotainment screen), the Armada is set to impress families in need of a spacious SUV.
No auto show would be complete without a big electric presence, and GMC’s Hummer EV certainly delivers. With a range of 359 miles and the ability to rocket from 0 to 60 mph in just 3 seconds, this off-road beast is as fun as it is capable. Equipped with 35-inch tires and 18 camera views, the Hummer EV is ready for any adventure.
The Utah International Auto Expo runs through Monday, offering something for everyone — from exotic cars to everyday drivers. Don’t miss this chance to engage with America’s love affair with the automobile. Whether you’re an enthusiast or just curious, you’re sure to find something to excite your inner driver.
