The sun sets on the Salt Lake Temple, which is undergoing renovation, during the evening session of general conference in Utah on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024.

A target date is set for the reopening of the Salt Lake Temple.

President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Friday that the temple will open its doors for a public open house from April to October 2027.

“A current and comprehensive renovation to strengthen this sacred house of the Lord for future generations is now nearing completion,” Nelson said in a social media post. “We warmly invite our friends to come and learn about God’s plan for His children and rejoice in the love of Jesus Christ. Details about this event will be shared as April 2027 approaches.”

Arguably the church’s most famous landmark, the 131-year-old temple has been closed for extensive renovations and preservation efforts since 2019.

The project originally was estimated to be completed in 2023, but that date has twice been pushed back due to construction delays.

Major construction updates were announced in January, including the completion of the vertical coring, which entailed drilling 46 holes through the temple’s stone from the top of the six spires to beneath the building’s original foundation, meant to secure it in case of an earthquake.

Renovations to the temple’s two baptistries, as well as celestial and sealing rooms also are nearing completion.

Nelson’s reopening announcement comes 172 years after the Salt Lake Temple was first completed on Feb. 14, 1853.

Starting at $4.32/week.
