Fillmore is rolling out the red carpet for the OHV community in hosting the 38th Annual National OHV Jamboree. It is dubbed National because it was the first jamboree to be held in the nation. The dates are set for June 25-27.

Registration is online at https://millardcounty.com/events/utv-atv-jamboree. On Tuesday, riders will pick up registration packets and choose rides from 4-7 p.m. Signing up before the end of March earns you an extra poker hand for the poker run. Jamboree headquarters will be at the Fillmore Armory, 45 W. Center St.

Fees this year are $120 per adult and $88 for children 6-18. It includes a breakfast each morning, two dinners, a jamboree T-shirt and a swag bag full of coupons and other goodies. The guided rides are a bonus. Another bonus is an ice cream social sponsored by the KOA.

A jamboree is one of the best ways to learn where to ride and to meet other riders. The guides are seasoned riders from the Sand Rock Ridge Riders, Fillmore’s premier OHV club. They know the trails and the history of the area.

The jamboree will draw a lot of people to Fillmore. The people of Fillmore want you to see the history of the city. Of course, there is the Territorial State House, which I have enjoyed, but there is a new park with a lot to offer young children. It is a peaceful place for families. The jamboree packet will also include a pass for free swimming at the county swimming pool during the event.

The Cedar Mountain RV Resort offers a buy two nights get one free at their resort for the jamboree dates. They have a new swimming pool at the resort that helps round out the recreational offerings there.

Looking at the rides offered this year, organizers are jumping the gun on Halloween by holding a scary ride after dark when the mountain becomes haunted. This ride promises to be frighteningly fun. No trailering will be required for the rides this year. They will start and end in Fillmore.

Fillmore is located next to the largest OHV trail system in the country — the Paiute ATV Trail System. It consists of one main 275-mile loop which takes about 25 riding hours to complete and hundreds of miles of side trails.

I have ridden that loop with some friends. We started from Marysvale at 6:30 on a July morning just to say that we did it. I was riding a Kawasaki Prairie 650 ATV which has a solid rear axle, meaning that it was not cushy like my RZR. We ate meals at restaurants and rolled into our Marysvale motel at midnight finishing the trail in 17.5 hours. It was a long day and a ride to remember.

Some of my favorite trails start in Fillmore. The Fillmore Loop, for example, takes you up Sand Rock Ridge to the top of the mountain. On the second leg, you ride the ridges at over 9,000 feet and feel like you are on top of the world. The third leg drops you down into Chalk Creek Canyon and through some water crossings where you might get your feet wet. Wider side-x-sides will stay on the main road because of a 50-inch restriction on Chalk Creek.

Shady trails and mountain views await jamboree participants.

The Dry Wash/Big Oaks trail is listed as a beginner’s ride, but it is one of my favorites. It does have a 60-inch restriction, but with the right size machine, you will enjoy a shaded trail through Dry Wash.

A couple of lunch runs go to Richfield to eat at some excellent restaurants in town. I am always up for a lunch run — it beats snacks on the trail any day. While most of the rides at the jamboree are on open trails, there are some 60-inch trails and some rides are on trails with 50-inch width restrictions.

Rides are scheduled for the west desert, which includes exploring, lava tubes and the amazing Lace Curtain — a huge wall of lava extrusions that were formed underwater. Located on the side of an extinct volcano, it appears to be a wall of melted wax. The lava extrusions are fascinating, and some large birds have found it ideal for nesting.

When you go, take plenty of water, keep the rubber side down and sign up for this jamboree. Fillmore has 38 years of experience and they put on a great show.
