Scrambled! is settling into its second location, on 1241 Washington Blvd, after opening Sept. 23.

“We’re excited to bring our food to Ogden and offering something different than the norm,” owner Oscar Rodriguez said. “I hope everyone will give us a try.”

Rodriguez opened the original Scrambled! in March 2020 in a Layton strip mall at 2151 North Hill Field Road. Its fast casual, order-at-the-counter format, and signature items like Oscar’s Wicket Skillet, avocado toast, Utah-style scones, chili verde-smothered burritos and specialty coffees soon gained a following.

But the 46-seat Layton location was often packed with waiting lines and Rodriguez felt it was time to expand to a second location.

“We began looking around to the north,” Rodriguez said. “When this property came on the market, we couldn’t pass it up.”

The building was previously a Sonic Drive-In, and a Wendy’s before that. The large windows give the remodeled dining area a light, spacious feel, with indoor seating for 62 and 15-16 outdoors. There’s also ample parking and a drive-through window.

It took longer to move in than Rodriguez expected. The kitchen was totally overhauled, and the roof and a sewer line were replaced.

The Ogden location has the same hours, fast-casual format, menu and prices.

“The only difference is that this space allows us to produce at a greater capacity,” Rodriguez said.

For a new business, it’s been fairly busy, Rodriguez said.

“Our sales here are only about 15% less than our Layton store, and our sales in Layton have actually increased.”

As far as Ogden’s menu preferences, “We sell a lot more chili verde here than we do in Layton. And more gravy,” Rodriguez said. “But we’ve only been here several weeks, and we are still seeing what people like. I think people love breakfast overall, but our lunch-goers are pretty consistent.”

Scrambled! offers most traditional breakfast items — omelets, pancakes, waffles, French toast and biscuits and gravy. Oscar’s Wicked Skillet is a signature favorite — crispy hash browns topped with cheese, bacon, ham, sausage, jalapenos, grilled onions and tomatoes, with two eggs.

Because so many customers requested the skillet without meat, cheese and eggs, Rodriguez added a Wicked Vegan Skillet to the menu. Hash browns are topped with sauteed mushrooms, red onion, Roma tomato, green pepper, spinach, fresh sliced jalapenos and sliced avocado.

“It’s become one of my more popular items,” he said. “Anything with avocado sells really well.”

Country- fried steak is another recent addition partly due to customer feedback. The breaded, deep-fried steak is smothered in house-made creamy sausage gravy.

“It’s a dish I love,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez’s mother, Claudia Flores, created the pork chile verde that’s used in Huevos con Chile Verde and Claudia’s Pork Chile Verde Burrito. The fragrant cinnamon rolls, slathered with rich cream cheese frosting, are also her recipe.

The Cheddar’s Special Burger has been popular with the Ogden lunch crowd. It’s a 1/3-pound beef patty topped with candied bacon, ham, cheddar, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato. It comes with a choice of Cajun potatoes, hash browns or kettle-cooked chips

“You never expect a great burger from a breakfast place, but ours could compete with any place out there,” Rodriguez said.

Has he removed any items from his initial menu?

“I keep looking for things to take off, but everything sells,” he said.

Scrambled! is one of few local breakfast/brunch places with fast casual service.

“Some people don’t like fast casual, but it’s the world we live in that everyone is limited on time,” he said. “It’s more efficient. People can get in and out more quickly.”

But, he cautions, “Nothing here is ‘fast food,’ everything is made in-house. We used to try to be super fast, but now we’re focusing on flavor and efficiency more than anything else.”

After ordering, you can expect to wait 8-10 minutes for your order, or longer during peak hours.
