WSU’s Haunted Opera offers chills, thrills in time for Halloween

OGDEN — Weber State University’s “Haunted Opera Scenes” promises to give Halloween chills and thrills through music Wednesday, Oct. 28. The show will be put on by performing arts students in the newly renovated Allred Theater in the Browning Center. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Prices range from $10 to $12.

Show director Karen Bruestle did a “Haunted Opera Scenes” show several years ago and decided it was time to bring it back. “It’s fun to do a Halloween special and now that we can get back into the Allred Theater it seemed like a good time,” Bruestle said.

The Allred Theater has new seats and a new sound system. It re-opened this month.

Twelve students are involved with the show — 11 performers and one student director. The show is comprised of operatic scenes from several operas and musicals that deal with the supernatural and “the scariest type of things,” Bruestle said.

As the show was being put together, Bruestle realized there was a wide selection of “scary” pieces that could be performed. Bruestle also included some scenes from musical theater that fit with the theme.

There will be scenes from operas such as the “Turn of the Screw” (WSU did that production recently), “The Medium,” “Carmen,” “Tosca” and “Hansel and Gretel.” Musical pieces include scenes from “Jekyll and Hyde,” “The Secret Garden” and “Sweeney Todd.”

“They are all just fabulous for this time of year,” Bruestle said.

She joked that the scenes are “fun to do” in that there is a different feel to a scary show. “We have been having a good time with it,” Bruestle said. “It’s just a different feel to do an entire show that relates to ghosts and other world things.”

She said there is a lot of great opera within the parameters of the theme. “There is some pretty serious, heavy stuff, but there is also some light-hearted great music,” she said.

Students are graded on their performances. Bruestle said students don’t audition for their roles, but she assigns them based on their voices and other factors indicating a good fit. The students work hard on consistency in their roles and learning their roles well, Bruestle said. She is happy with the how the process has worked and with the talent the students are displaying.

The show will be performed with the “theater in the black” theme where most of the stage and costumes are black with some color touches. “We have a wonderful lighting designer with Fluffy Blake and it looks really good,” Bruestle said.

Some scenes are performed with only two or three in the scene, while some are the entire cast. Bruestle likes to bring a variety to the stage.
