“Doctor Odyssey” airs on ABC and streams on Hulu.

The ABC series “Doctor Odyssey” has met with both criticism and praise. The second part of the first season premiered March 6 and, as yet, there has been no word whether the series will be renewed for a second cruise.

Setting shows on cruise ships is not new. Most notably is “The Love Boat” with its romantic escapades (1977-1987) and the Hallmark movie series “Love on the Danube” is also set on a cruise ship, although much calmer as it cruises down the Danube in a luxurious setting. Now “Doctor Odyssey” brings viewers aboard the luxury cruise ship with Don Johnson as Capt. Robert Massey running his ship with great care while looking after the needs of his passengers.

Joshua Jackson is the new doctor aboard The Odyssey. He has a past that often interferes with his present, however he is an excellent doctor and the medical facility on board this super luxurious ship are the best and most modern to be seen on any series. As a matter of fact, this facility rivals many urgent care facilities on land.

Phillipa Soo co-stars as Avery Morgan, the physician assistant who intends on becoming a fully fledged doctor. Sean Teale is Tristan Silva, the nurse who has a penchant for fun but also serves his patients with the utmost care.

Each cruise has a different theme. There is one cruise dedicated to post-operative patients, mostly plastic surgery patients. There is a rubber duck cruise and there are several other strange themed cruises, and through them all the team manages to care for even the most self-centered and obnoxious patients with care and the best outcomes. Singles week, Halloween week, a wedding cruise and more subjects have dedicated sailings on The Odyssey.

While there are strangely themed cruises, there are also strange medical situations that arise. However, this crew is up for everything.

Fans of Johnson are happy to see him back on a series, as are fans of Jackson who made his mark in the hit series “Dawson’s Creek,” which ran successfully from 1998-2003 and also brought Katie Holmes and James Van Der Beer to the public’s attention. Johnson’s “Nash Bridges” (1996-2001) and “Miami Vice” (1984-1989) cemented him as a TV favorite.

To say the themed voyages on The Odyssey are odd is an understatement. For that reason the reviews have been mixed. Between the weird cruises and the personal relationships on board the ship, there is plenty of drama combined with some whacky stories and even whackier characters.

The remaining episodes of the season began airing March 6 on ABC and streaming on Hulu.

Starting at $4.32/week.
