"Douglas is Cancelled," starring Hugh Bonneville and Karen Gillan, is now streaming on BritBox.

“Douglas is Cancelled” is a gripping story delving into workplace relationships and journalistic integrity. “Downton Abbey’s” Hugh Bonneville stars in this new drama streaming on BritBox.

Douglas Bellowes is one of Britain’s most beloved on-air presenters on a hit current events program. He is married to Sheila (Alex Kingston), a top-rated editor in the media. This woman is tough and knows how to take down public figures who get out of line, which she has done many times.

Douglas’ on-air co-presenter Madeline (Karen Gillan) is quickly becoming the darling of the industry. Their professional relationship has caught the attention of viewers, making their show one of the highest rated. With their producer Toby (Ben Miles) at the helm, this team has taken over the on-air news industry with a bang.

Then something happens to derail not only their show but Douglas’ career and possibly his life. Apparently he told a sexist joke at a wedding party but doesn’t remember the incident, which was tweeted out and went viral in minutes. This could be the end of his career if the situation doesn’t calm down. And it doesn’t, thanks to his colleague/partner Madeline who thinks she is helping him when she retweets the information with a caveat.

There are four episodes in this season. The first two delve into the lives of the characters up until the potential downfall of this news icon. Then there is an episode that looks back to the beginning of Madeline’s career at the station, which leaves viewers wondering what happened during her interview.

When Douglas is scheduled to be interviewed by one of the country’s beloved news magazine shows, his friends and family insists he does a rehearsal interview with someone he knows but will be tough on him to help him prepare for what could be a major attack on him about the tweeted incident. What happens during this rehearsal is a shock to everyone at the station.

The acting in the series is wonderful however there are no characters that really endear themselves to viewers. They are all flawed and very edgy. This entire show is edgy and dramatic. The focus is on gender politics, which is always a hot-button topic, and also on the influence that social media has in today’s society.

Fact-checking has gone out of the window for many people who read social media and take everything online as fact. Anyone can tweet out anything and people will take it at face value.

There are many take-aways from the show. Every episode will have viewers unraveling aspects of the lives and stories of the characters as they interact with old ways and new media.

The final episode reveals exactly what happened that led up to the repercussions of people’s actions and inactions.

Revealing any aspects of the characters and situations would be spoilers as the episodes are tightly stitched together leading viewers on an emotional journey.

With the entire season available to stream on BritBox, it is a good way to get the whole story in one sitting.

Starting at $4.32/week.
