Brokaw: ‘Whitstable Pearl’ returns for a third season
The picturesque (and often gloomy) British seaside town of Whitstable is the backdrop for the hit crime drama “Whitstable Pearl.” The series is based on “The Whitstable Pearl Mysteries” novels by Julie Wassmer.
Pearl (Kerry Godliman) does double duty in the town as the owner of a seafood restaurant and as a private investigator. In this season, Pearl’s yearlong relationship with her boyfriend, Tom (Robert Webb), seems to be on track, but Pearl’s priorities might not jibe with Tom’s desires.
The opening episode has Pearl investigating what could be the return of a woman who has been missing for seven years. She was seen on the pier, but was it really her? Her husband insists his wife left him and their baby twin daughters because she wasn’t happy, but Pearl’s instincts kick in and she uncovers the fate of the missing woman.
The second episode involves a kidnapping. Detective Chief Inspector Mike McGuire (Howard Charles) and his partner Detective Sgt. Nikki Martel (Sophia Del Pizzo) are tracking down leads while Pearl and her feisty mom, Dolly (Frances Barber), are approached by a psychic who wants to help locate the missing girl. A little twist helps Pearl solve the crime.
Episode three is tense as Pearl and Tom are away on a brief vacation when the big cheese restaurant critic (no pun intended) visits Whitstable. Unfortunately, he dies while dining at Pearl’s restaurant. All the restaurants in the town are shut down while the investigation into who poisoned the man takes several turns. Thankfully, Pearl’s head chef, Ruby (Isobelle Molloy), is cleared of any wrongdoing, but not before every chef in town is deemed a suspect.
Pearl’s son, Charlie (Rohan Nedd), returns from Canada after being away for a while, and for the first half of this season. When Pearl goes to London to track him down, she also learns a little more about Mike’s past, which is a mystery. While Pearl is away, a man who was convicted of murdering his wife 30 years ago returns to Whitstable. After a little investigation, Mike is convinced the man is innocent. While he is trying to prove something was fishy during the initial murder investigation, Dolly is sure he is guilty.
Episode five takes place around Halloween when the local ghost tour guide witnesses a body being dumped on the beach. Neither the police nor Pearl can find a body, but she is convinced the old man did see something. As she and Charlie befriend the old man, they turn up a horrific detail about his family.
And the final episode involves the question of who killed a taxi driver and attempted to kill an ex-financial executive. Could they be connected?
Running through the season are two threads. The town is putting on a play, “The Sound of Music.” Casting proves to be somewhat difficult at times. And the second thread is the death of Mike’s wife. It happened years earlier yet he cannot shake it off. The season finale ties up these two threads to the satisfaction of viewers.
The characters and their interactions are entertaining. Combining the investigations with their personal relationships creates an enjoyable show. The entire season is available to stream on AcornTV. This makes for a fun streaming event over a cold winter weekend.
