"House of David" brings the Bible story alive in eight episodes. From an idea by Jon Erwin, “House of David” is the biblical story of King David. Actually, the first season focuses on David’s life before he was anointed king, during the reign of King Saul.
Michael Iskander stars as David, an outcast in his family due to his parentage; yet, this boy was not deterred by the limitations put upon him. His bravery, kindness, intellect and great musical ability took him through the years as King Saul (Ali Suliman), the once-mighty king, rules until Samuel (Stephen Lang) gets a message from God that Saul is putting himself above the almighty. It was Samuel who originally heard from God to anoint Saul the first King of Israel but this man got too big for his britches, or possibly more aptly, his crown.
When David was selected to be the next anointed one, it was kept a secret for fear that David’s life might be endangered until Saul was gone. Saul was a jealous man and would not stand for a replacement. His vengeance would put David in danger if his destiny would be revealed.
When Samuel told him he was no longer going to be king, Saul’s mental illness began. He went insane, to a large degree, while at the same time trying to rule his kingdom and keep the tribes united.
Saul’s wife, Queen Ahinoam (Eyelet Zurer), does everything to keep the crown in the family. She likes being Queen and, like her husband, does not want to give up all that power and everything that comes with it.
Martyn Ford plays Goliath, who is intent on killing the Israelis as he blames them for the death of his beloved mother.
David must finally face the fact that he is the new king. His destiny awaits him; but first, he must face the mighty Goliath.
There are eight episodes in the first season. They take David from childhood to the rise of his fulfillment from the Almighty. Yet, during these episodes it is more about the reign of Saul and how David fits into the equation.
When David finally learns about his mother’s belief in him and her last words, the strength he has been keeping still inside his soul rises to the surface. He knows his destiny and as he goes forward, viewers see the power of God’s vision for the people of Israel.
The final episode brings the story full circle from the first scene in episode one as David gathers his inner confidence and knows God will see him through. His trust in God is unwavering. Yes, he is afraid to face Goliath, but he knows God is on his side and he will do whatever is asked of him.
While Saul is on his last days of ruling the kingdom, David’s inner strength rises, and even though he is still just a boy, he has been sanctioned by Samuel, who brought him the word of God and anointed him the next king of Israel.
This eight-part first season of “House of David” premiered Feb. 27 on Prime Video. This epic story is engaging and when the credits roll, viewers will be anxious to see the next season when David’s rise will fulfill God’s intentions and bring new hope and leadership to the people of Israel.
