Brokaw: ‘A Very Royal Scandal’ on Prime Video looks at the interview that changed the monarchy
Interviews by royals are infamous for shining the light on various aspects of the royal family. Diana’s interview in 1995 led to her inevitable divorce with then-Prince Charles. Harry’s Oprah interview in 2021 with Meghan shone a light on the lies they reportedly were spreading about the royals, the media and Britain. “A Very Royal Scandal” is a three-part show about Prince Andrew’s November 2019 interview, his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and his alleged indiscretions.
Part One looks at the interviewer, Emily Maitlis (Ruth Wilson), and her team at the BBC who were anxious to snare an exclusive interview with Andrew (Michael Sheen). At first reluctant, Andrew eventually decided to do the interview to prove his innocence and show the public what a good guy he is. His daughter Beatrice (Honor Swinton Byrne) was on his side. She felt he deserved the chance to clear his name.
While the BBC and Maitlis were preparing for the upcoming interview, Andrew was waiting patiently for his opportunity to tell his side of the story that captured the attention of the world. Namely, that he had an improper relationship with an underaged girl at the behest of Epstein.
Part Two looks at the actual interview. Andrew had certain points he wanted brought up, but after the interview wrapped he was upset that those points were left out. Maitlis and her crew decided to add an additional taping to appease him. In the interview, Andrew firmly attested to the fact that he never knew the alleged victim; he had no knowledge of her. And the kicker was that she had gone on record saying he sweated profusely. Andrew insisted he could not have sweated because he doesn’t sweat.
In fact, Andrew’s entire performance during the interview was a joke and something he felt was right but was altogether wrong. He had no idea what a fool he made of himself and what a mess he made of his family’s reputation.
Part Three looks at the aftermath of the interview. Maitlis reeled from the backlash from some and also reveled in the joy of getting the exclusive interview that shocked the world. With both Maitlis and Andrew dealing with the aftermath, this show delves into the workings of the royal family and how Andrew’s actions stained the family, and especially the queen, who immediately took away his patronages and insisted he stay out of the public eye. After all, it was the year of her Platinum Jubilee and she wanted the country to be proud of her life’s work and not dwell on the stupidity of her third child, who brought disgrace to the household.
Even his daughters were embarrassed by his interview but also disappointed with Maitlis for the way she conducted the questions and how that affected them and their personal lives. Andrew was not part of Beatrice’s official wedding photo and he was effectively erased from the family as far as the public was concerned.
This show premiered in September but is not outdated, as the royal family continues to be in the news daily and some members, especially Harry and Meghan, continue to try to blemish the work of the late queen and King Charles, as well as the other working royals. It’s an interesting look at the childish and entitled behavior of Prince Andrew.
“A Very Royal Scandal” is available to stream on Prime Video. It looks at both sides of the disastrous interview from the perspective of both Maitlis and the prince. The show premiered last fall but is still being talked about today, as is that disastrous interview.
