Cyrus Freston

Mar 28, 2025

May 28, 1933 – March 19, 2025

Cyrus Wheelock Freston “Sonny” passed away at the age of 91 on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 in Brigham City, Utah. Cy was born on May 28, 1933, in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, to Cyrus W. Freston and Lillian Fowkes Freston. His family lived in Mt. Pleasant until Cy was 10. The family then moved to Washington Terrace. Cy was the oldest of 4 sons.

While growing up in Washington Terrace, Cy became a very good athlete. He played quarterback for Weber High School and Weber Junior College. He also played baseball and softball for many city league teams over the years.

He graduated from Weber High School, Weber Junior College, Utah State University, BS-MS and the University of Texas in Austin with his PhD.

Cy coached and taught at Weber High School. He was also a professor at the University of Utah before moving to the Utah State Department of Education, and then to Special Education Director at the Ogden School District. He finished his professional career as Principal of Ben Lomond High School in the Ogden School District, a position he loved.

He married Carol Jean Deru on June 11, 1952. They had four children and later divorced. He then married Janet Lynn Minich on February 26, 1977; they had one son.

Cy was involved in the racehorse industry for many years. He raised and raced a lot of quality horses. He took great satisfaction in the success of his “home breds.” This is something that was enjoyed by the whole family.

The cabin at Henry’s Lake was Cy’s pride and joy. He spent countless hours fishing on Henry’s, always looking for the “big one.”

He lived the last 28 years in Honeyville, surrounded by the best neighbors in the world.

Cy was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was a Crimson Club Member and was an avid Ute Fan. He flew a Ute flag for years.

Cy is survived by his wife, Janet Freston; his daughter: Becky Crumbo; sons: Rick (Cindy), Jon, and Sean (June) Freston; and brother: James W. Freston; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He took great joy in his posterity.

He was preceded in death by his son: David J. Freston; son-in-law: Kim Crumbo; brothers: Robert and Jon Freston and his parents: Cyrus and Lillian Freston.

Cy wanted it to be known that he never sent or received a text! And he never used an ATM.

The family would like to thank his many friends who have been so helpful and supportive over the years. Cy truly loved you all. And a special thank you to Maple Springs Assisted Living, Atlas Hospice, and Myers Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, please donate something to your favorite charity.
