Elizabeth Jean (Slaunewhite) Symonds
May 19, 1939 — January 18, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Betty, who departed this world peacefully on January 18, 2025, at the age of 85. Betty was a beloved Mum, Nan and friend to many and leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, grace and unwavering love.
Betty was born on May 19, 1939, in Berwick, Nova Scotia to parents Ronald and Geraldine (Gibbson) Slaunewhite. She grew up in Halifax and graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School.
She married her high school sweetheart Joseph E. Symonds Jr. in 1961 which started a 21-year adventure as a military wife. This adventure took her all over the United States and the Philippines.
After dad died, she carved out a life of her own. She fulfilled her dream of being in the medical field and became a Medical and Ophthalmology Assistant to Dr. Mark Bailiff.
Mum was also very involved in the Ogden Community sitting on many boards, Salvation Army, Egyptian Theater, Utah Musical Theater, and the Chairwoman for the Ogden Opera Guild’s Chocolate Affair. She also had a passion for traveling and traveled the world. Never one to sit on the sidelines, she was very involved in her girls’ lives and was there for every swim meet and tumbling competition. Even learning to be a stroke judge and tumbling judge for her daughters and continued this tradition cheering for her grandchildren.
Betty is survived by daughters, Rhonda Ingram (Doug), Debra Willey (Alonzo) and Kendell Symonds (Gary Amundsen); three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe and her parents.
A Celebration of Live will be held at a later date. Interment, Acadia Cemetery in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Arrangements entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
