Sherman Heber Smith

Sherm was born on October 23, 1944, in Salt Lake City to Gerald H. and Zelda May Summers Smith. He grew up in Draper, Utah where he learned the value of hard work from his grandmother, loved the beauty of the outdoors and the freedom of country life.

He attended Jordan High School, Brigham Young University and graduated with an MBA from the University of Utah. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in London, England. He later visited most of the countries of Europe and loved to take others and share travel experiences.

Sherm and Cheryl Holley were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 9, 1970. Together they raised two sons and a daughter.

Sherm was a partner in the CPA firm Schmitt, Griffiths, Smith and was actively involved in the Utah Association of CPAs. He volunteered on many not-for-profit boards during his life.

Sherm was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings including bishop. Sherm and Cheryl served a mission in the South Seas islands of Vanuatu. They loved the kindhearted people they served.

Sherm was an avid runner and was happiest when he was moving and outside. He completed many marathons, often finishing first in his age group. He ran the Boston, New York, and Marine Corps but the Ogden Marathon was by far his favorite.

Sherm was a familiar face in the LotoJa bike race. He loved to bike and be with friends. He enjoyed skiing and loved keeping up with his grandkids as they raced down the mountain at Snowbasin. He enjoyed backpacking with his family and bringing new people along. He believed in the life skills that are taught in Scouting and spent years of his life teaching others how to live.

Sherm is survived by his wife, Cheryl; children, Ryan (Jamie), Jeremy (Mandy), and daughter, Melissa. His six grandchildren, Ally, Brynn, Logan, Grant, Gavin and Elise will miss him terribly.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Weber Heights Stake Center, 1401 Country Hills Drive. Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, Mountain Green Cemetery.
