LaVern Shaw Cottrell

LaVern Shaw Cottrell, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, quietly passed away on the morning of September 6, 2024. She was born on August 21, 1935, raised in North Ogden and lived there most of her 89 years. She was the second daughter of Wilford L. and E. Lucille Bingham Shaw. She loved growing up close to her beloved Ben Lomond Peak. She attended North Ogden Elementary then graduated from Weber High School, Class of 1953.

LaVern met her future sweetheart, Calvin W. Cottrell when they were juniors in high school. They dated and went to dances together. They both went to Weber College for a year before marrying on June 28, 1954 in the Salt Lake Temple.

She was a founding member of the North Ogden History Museum in 2004 and started the Museum in the old fire station. She served as president of the history museum for many years and was a driving force in the health and growth of the museum.

She was a very active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as the president of the ward and stake Young Women’s, stake and ward camp director, ward and stake Primary president, Cub Scout Den Leader for many years, and she was very active as a Family History Specialist.

She received the Weber Human Services AmeriCorps award for 15 years of dedicated volunteer service.

She worked at the IRS for 35 years and received the highest award given to an IRS employee. She felt very honored to receive the Presidential Award, the Albert Gallatin Award.

She loved camping, golf, hiking, genealogy, and grandkid’s activities. She was an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

LaVern is survived by her 4 children, Curtis (Brenda), Dale (Jenny), Scott (Lenay), Sheila (Mike) Sorensen, 21 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren with 1 on the way, and a brother, Jerald (Tracy) Shaw.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister LouJean Stanger, her brother Marvin Shaw and 1 grandson, Tyson Cottrell.

Services will be held at 11 am on Monday, September 9th, 2024 at the Ben Lomond 8th Ward, 3610 N 650 E. North Ogden UT. There will be a viewing Sunday night from 6-8 at the church and prior to service from 9:30-10:30, also at the church.
