Kathleen Taylor Newman

Nov 15, 2024

Kathleen Taylor Newman was born February 13, 1928 in Raymond, Alberta, Canada, the fourth of the six children of Zettella Goodridge and Frank R. Taylor and the first one born in Canada after the family’s move from Utah with the Knight Sugar Company.

She enjoyed a happy small-town childhood and a rigorous education, modeled on the British style. She chose to attend BYU where she met Analu Newman, the sister of her future husband, Frank.

After her graduation, she and Frank were married in the Cardston Alberta Temple in March 1951.

Following Frank’s graduation from the University of Utah, they moved to Ogden and were happy to be able to buy his childhood home, where they lived for over 70 years.

Kathleen taught school briefly before settling down to raise her children–Linda, Margaret, Taylor and Sylvia–who always brought her a lot of happiness.

She was a gifted seamstress and made many of her children’s clothes. Later, she enjoyed quilting and made sure that every one of her 21 grandchildren received a quilt made with love for their wedding.

She also enjoyed entertaining and cooking for friends and family in her home. She felt it was very important for the family to eat all their meals together and kept to a regular schedule. One time when Linda was in early morning seminary, her friend did not believe her when she said that her family had breakfast together every day before she left. So, she invited him to join them the next morning – which he did.

Kathleen was always faithful in her church callings. She served as president of the Primary and the Young Women, but most of her time was spent in the ward and stake Relief Society. She loved working with the women in that great sisterhood.

When the children were old enough, she went to work in the Audio-Visual lab (later the Technology lab) in the Education Department at Weber State. She enjoyed helping the delightful prospective teachers learn how to do wonderful projects to enhance their teaching.

After fifteen years, she retired and went with Frank on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to New Zealand and the Cook Islands. They found both places exciting and full of learning experiences about the people and the Gospel. Upon their return, they fulfilled a service mission in the Monroe Branch and later served for several years in the Ogden Temple.

Kathleen is survived by her four children, Linda Mecham (Kent), Margaret Tribe (Michael), Taylor Newman (Nila), and Sylvia Newman (Robert Fudge), and her sister-in-law Mary Newman Pyper. She was blessed with 21 grandchildren and more than 70 great-grandchildren who brought lots of sunshine into her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frank, her siblings and their spouses.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024 at 11 am at the Taylor Canyon Ward, 1643 26th St. Ogden. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 6-8 pm and on Wednesday prior to the services from 9:30-10:30 am.

Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
