Ventura Gabaldon Sandoval (1929-2004)

Our loving mother and grandmother, Ventura Gabaldon Sandoval, passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, in Clearfield, Utah. Ventura was born in Bernalillo, New Mexico, on June 9, 1929, to Jose and Senovia Gabaldon.
Ventura was raised in New Mexico before moving to Ogden, Utah, with her family in the 1940’s. She came from a very large family of 12 where she was one of the oldest and was often helping her parents with her siblings. She went to Catholic school through the 8th grade and continued to support her parents as they aged and were no longer able to care for themselves.
Ventura married Gerrardo (Herold) Sandoval on December 22, 1948 in Abiquiu, New Mexico. They were married a total of 74 years before Herold passed in January 2022. Herold and Ventura lived in Abiquiu, NM, San Francisco, CA, “The Anchorage”, Clearfield, UT, Sunset, UT, East Layton, UT, and finally at Chancellor Gardens in Clearfield, UT. Mom made many friends at each of these homes and would speak fondly of her time in “The Anchorage” and Sunset where she raised her children.
Ventura was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic church where she was an active member and continued to stay connected with the church through her visits with Deacon Manuel Trujillo, who the family cannot thank enough for his acts of kindness. Mom started working at a very young age and often spoke of her time working as a nanny for Dr. Noal Tanner and his wife Helen, where they affectionately called her Hullabaloo. She worked at the Salvation Army when her children were young, and continued on as a federal civil servant, eventually retiring from Defense Depot Ogden where she was a supply clerk. She would tell you that her most meaningful job was Mom and Grandma aka babysitter. For those that were fortunate enough to know Ventura, you would know that she loved her family, her flowers, and anyone that was in need. She was a fabulous cook, and you could always count on beans, chili, and fresh tortillas when you entered the house. She never missed a birthday, ballgame, recital, or school function and frequently said, “I love all my kids.” She had many hobbies that included Bunka Japanese embroidery, fishing, camping, bowling, golf, ceramics, sewing, and any other craft project she could find!
Ventura is survived by her six children, Robert (Cris) Sandoval, Mercedes (Andrew) Ocana, Louisa (Floyd, deceased) Trujillo, Luis (Karen) Sandoval, Michael Sandoval (Yulia Tykhomyrova), and Michelle (Korey) Hathaway. Ventura is also survived by 6 siblings, Aurelio Gabaldon, Toby (Viola) Gabaldon, Rita Garcia, Rosie Medina, Margaret (Louie) Alarid, and Fred Gabaldon. Ventura was preceded in death by her husband Herold, parents, Father-in-law (Joe Sandoval), Mother-in-law (Sabina Sandoval), Grandson (Chase Sandoval), Son-in-law (Floyd Trujillo), Brothers (Ernie Gabaldon & Gilbert Gabaldon), sisters (Dorothy Lovato, Sophie Rosas, & Teresa Medina), brothers-in-law (Henry Medina & Joe Rosas), and sister-in-law (Tonya Gabaldon). Ventura leaves behind 21 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Sally Huntington the staff at Chancellor Gardens who treated “Their Grandma” with so much love and care. The family would also like to thank Visiting Angels and all the medical staff that have assisted mom over the years. Special thanks to Margarita Cano, Father Vidal, Deacon Manuel Trujillo, Stacie Branhall, Jamie Atkinson, and Tammy Anderson. Lastly, the family would like to say thanks to Gary Michaud and her wonderful neighbors that visited and watched over our parents at their home in East Layton.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 18, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 210 Chapel Street, Layton, Utah. Friends may visit family on Sunday, November 17, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Lindquist’ Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah.
A vigil with Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m.
