H. Dee Hutzley
March 30, 1929 — June 17, 2024
Harold Dee Hutzley, affectionately known to all as “Dee,” passed away peacefully at his home on June 17, 2024, with his wife, Beverly, by his side. For 74 and a half years they remained best friends and sweethearts.
Dee was born in Harrisville, Utah, on March 30, 1929, the youngest of three children of Norma Shupe and Nephi John Hutzley.
Raised and schooled in Harrisville, Dee graduated from Wahlquist Junior High School and then Weber High School, Class of 1947. He then attended Weber College, graduating in 1949.
Dee played basketball throughout all of his school years, and football during high school. He loved sports and continued with basketball on church teams, and in later years loved fly-fishing and was an avid golfer, winning many tournaments.
Dee met the love of his life at the grocery store where he worked. Beverly Edsinga was a regular customer shopping with her mother and Dee knew what a good catch she was and didn’t let her get away. They were married on October 5, 1949, being sealed in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They raised three lovely daughters, Linda, Terry, and Sandra. They would have celebrated their Diamond Anniversary in October.
Dee worked hard his whole life – from the brickyards to the grocery stores as a youth – he ran to work until he could legally drive, but he still made deliveries. Dee worked his way up at Wangsgards until he became an owning partner in 1959. Over the course of time, he became the sole proprietor.
Dee was involved actively in the Church and a pillar in the Ogden business community. He was a long-time member of the Five Points Rotary and Businessmen’s Association and was President of the Ogden Golf and Country Club, President of the Ogden Chamber of Commerce, the Utah Retail Grocers Association, Mayor of Box Canyon Village Island Park, Idaho, and an original organizer of the Ben Lomond Bank (now part of Bank of Utah). Dee served on the Board of Directors for the Bank of Utah for over 50 years, finally retiring at age 90.
Dee served in four bishoprics and on the stake high council, but his favorite calling was being a husband, a father, a grandfather and an uncle. His love of family knew no bounds.
Dee will be remembered for many qualities, but mostly for his generosity, his enduring kindness and purposeful consideration of others. He was a devoted family man, through and through.
He will be loved and missed by his sweet wife, Beverly E. Hutzley; daughters, Linda H. (Richard) Rhees, Terry A. Craig, Sandra H. (Dino) Dawson; eight grandchildren and their spouses; four great-grandchildren; as well as by his nephew and nieces, Forest Tackett, Cindy Tackett, and Joni (Rick) Larson, who joined their family for a number of years.
Dee was preceded in death by parents; his son-in-law, Allan Craig, and by his nephew, Forest Tackett; also, by his brother, Thurman and sister, Beth.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Ben Lomond Cemetery, North Ogden.
