Arnold George Adamson Jr.
1931 – 2024
On Dec. 15, 2024, Arnold George Adamson Jr. (93) passed away peacefully in Layton, Utah. He was born Oct. 22, 1931 to Arnold George Adamson and Estella Smith Adamson. He grew up on their farm in Draper, Utah and graduated in 1949 from Jordan High School. He attended Utah State University and studied civil engineering, graduating in 1954. There he met the love of his life, Marion Nuffer, and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on Sept. 1, 1953. They welcomed seven children into their home.
He served in the United States Air Force, Utah National Guard, and the US Air Force Reserves, retiring in 1978 with the rank of Major. When he returned home to Utah, he worked as an engineer for several firms and eventually the LDS Church Building Department. He moved to Ogden in 1966 to become the Assistant Public Works Director and City Engineer. In 1969 he started his own structural engineering firm which became known as ARW Engineering. His firm has done the structural engineering for commercial and education buildings, as well as for LDS meeting houses and temples. He retired in 1997.
George was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings throughout his life. Upon retirement, he and Marion served a mission to Accra, Ghana from 1997-99. They also served service missions to the Ogden Regional Genealogy Center and the Ogden Dry Pack Cannery.
George enjoyed golfing, skiing, basketball, tennis, backpacking in the Wind Rivers, hiking the foothills above his home, and attending family events. He loved gardening and sharing his abundant produce with family and neighbors.
He is survived by Marion and his 7 children, Ronald (Pam), Karleen (Alvin) Gabrielsen, Cynthia (Jeff) Wood, Katharine (Christopher) Dexter, David (Shannon), Angela (Shane) Thorpe, and Marie (Bryant) Sorensen, his sisters Janet Alsop and Emalie Jones Peel, 26 grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lola Marvin, brother David and two beloved grandsons, Dallin and Nathan.
A viewing will be at Myers Mortuary, 250 N Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah. from 6:00-8:00pm on Thursday, Dec. 26. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, Dec. 27 at the Shadow Valley Ward meeting house, 5191 Old Post Road, Ogden, Utah. Friends may visit with the family from 9:30 – 10:30am prior to the service. Interment: Lindquist Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road, Ogden, Utah.
