Joseph West Brewer Jr.

Aug 30, 2023

Joseph West Brewer Jr., affectionately known as Joe, or “JW”, passed away peacefully at home on August 23rd, 2023, he was 92 years old. Born on March 9, 1931, in Ogden, UT, to Joseph West Brewer Sr. and Myrene Rich Brewer. His enduring legacy will be his family that he loved and that loved him. He was a shining example to all in his own quiet loving way. He never preached but let his example be the sermon that taught all who were fortunate to know him. He was truly a “Family” man.

He spent his early years growing up in Ogden Utah. His youth was filled with great experiences building wonderful memories with his family and relatives at the summer home in South Fork, known as “Camp”. Riding horses, floating the river, fishing, and hunting with his dad and brothers. It was here that he learned to love the outdoors. Joe served a full-time mission to the England Manchester Mission where he gained a love for people and a deep commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Upon his return he graduated from the University of Utah. There was no greater blessing in his life than his sweetheart, Carol Jean Shaum. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on Sept 15, 1954, 69 years ago. Together, they moved to El Paso, Texas while he finished his service in the Army. After his service in the Army, Joe and Carol moved to Salt Lake and raised their family in the foothills of the east bench.

Joe was a faithful and devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had a special love for missionary service. Together, he and Carol served in the England London mission. They also served a service mission in the Ogden 4th ward, and he later served as the branch President of the Ogden Monroe branch. These provided rewarding opportunities for Joe and Carol to serve together.

Joe lived a remarkably full life. He found great satisfaction in building the J.W. Brewer Tire Company into the intermountain west largest tire distributor. He built his company making service, quality, integrity, and loyalty the cornerstones of the company. He treated his employees like family. Throughout his entire career, he remained a humble man, always prioritizing others before himself. His compassionate nature extended beyond his professional life, touching every aspect of his personal life too. Joe made sure his family learned to love the outdoors as well. Trips to Jackson Hole, Flaming Gorge, Lake Powell, Palm Springs were the favorites. He loved activities like fishing, hunting, golfing, skiing, boating, flying, gardening, and reading. But nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family, there was no greater joy than having his family all together. Home was a gathering place where family bonds were solidified around good food, laughter, and good conversation.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Carol, and their children: David (Sherrie), Laura, Jon (Sheri), Andy, Nancy (Rob), daughter in law Susan, 23 grandchildren, 64 great grandchildren, brother Rodney Brewer, and sister Mary Brewer Ford. He was preceded in death by his son Joseph West Brewer III, parents Joseph and Myrene Brewer, his siblings Sharlene Brewer Glassman, E. “Rich” Brewer, and Alexander Brewer.
