Back country avalanche danger

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Avalanche Center issued a warning effective through today, saying a natural avalanche cycle is in progress.

Large amounts of new snow with wind has created a high avalanche danger, the e-mail states, and people should avoid any steep slopes. With the weather clearing somewhat today and lingering unstable snow, “the busy holiday is ripe for an avalanche accident.”

Backcountry travelers should check the latest avalanche conditions by monitoring the website at: www.UtahAvalancheCenter.org or call 888-999-4019. Recorded information is customized for each forecast area. Also check for road closures by checking the UDOT avalanche closure website or calling the UDOT recording at (801) 975-4838.

The warning does not apply to ski areas where avalanche control is normally conducted.
