SALT LAKE CITY -- GOP Congressman Jason Chaffetz has handily won his bid to represent Utah's 3rd congressional district for a third term.

The 45-year-old Republican had faced architect Soren Simonsen, the chairman of the Salt Lake City Council, in Tuesday's general election.

Chaffetz  had considered challenging U.S Sen. Orrin Hatch and had the backing of national tea party groups. He later opted to run again for his House seat.

He has been a vocal advocate for significant budget cuts to reduce the debt.

Chaffetz favors deporting illegal immigrants, eliminating in-state tuition for them and no longer automatically granting citizenship to children born in the United States to illegal immigrants.

He says spending is out of control in Congress and programs need to be cut to get the deficit under control.
