Prep soccer: Jayhawks, Eagles earn second home contests

St. Joseph and Layton Christian each earned impressive victories on Wednesday in the opening round of the state 2-A boys soccer tournament. The wins afforded each team a second home contest on Saturday afternoon.

St. Joseph (12-3-0 overall) topped Liahona 6-0 on Wednesday at Lew Joseph Field. Keeper Mitch Koehler posted the shutout while Adam Brodstein scored a pair of goals.

David Donlevy, Oswald Cruz, Ty Evans and Takuya Ishikawa also added scores as the Jayhawks took control with five scores after halftime.

St. Joseph, which tied for the 2-A Central Division title but entered the tournament as No. 2 seed, will now host Gunnison, a 4-3 overtime winner over North Division champion Oakley. Game time is 1 p.m.

Layton Christian 4, Grand County 2

At Layton, the Eagles took control with four scores in the first half and coasted to victory.

Layton Christian will now host Beaver on Saturday at 1 p.m. Beaver pulled the upset of the tournament, dispatching Rowland Hall in penalty kicks.

Tanatol Fanguthai scored a pair of goals for LCA (7-4-0), whil Seong Dae Shin and Shadadi Musemakeil also added scores.

Koby Sobremesana and Tyler Hugentobler each had goals for Grand.

State 3-A tournament

Ogden and Ben Lomond will host home contests, while Bear River will take it on the road today in 3-A tournament openers.

Region 11 champion Ogden hosts Snow Canyon, while Ben Lomond draws Delta in 4 p.m. contests.

Bear River is at Payson. The quarterfinals are Saturday.
