How do you make a cupcake that is funny? That question will be answered tonight on the Food Network's "Cupcake Wars," during perhaps its most hilarious episode yet, airing at 6 p.m.
Two local contestants, Michelle Flowers and her brother, Shawn Iacovelli, both of Ogden, compete on this installment, which is based around the theme "Funny or Die," inspired by Will Ferrell's comedy video website of the same name.
Flowers, owner of the Vintage Cupcake Co., a bakery on Ogden's Historic 25th Street, said she sent in her audition tape last summer and flew to Los Angeles for the taping in the fall of 2011.
After waiting for months to hear if her audition was accepted, Flowers said she and Iacovelli, who works with her at the bakery, had only two weeks to pack their bags and head to L.A. when they finally did receive word.
"The Food Network likes the element of surprise," she said of the experience.
Flowers and Iacovelli competed against three other pairs of contestants for a $10,000 prize.
In a series of elimination rounds, they first baked cupcakes to be judged on flavor, using designated secret ingredients. In the second round, their cupcakes were judged on presentation. And, in the final round, the remaining contestants had the challenge of baking 1,000 cupcakes in just two hours.
In an interview conducted via email, Justin Willman, the host of "Cupcake Wars" said: "As a huge 'funny-or-die' fan, this is one of my favorites of the season. Finally, we get to see bakers make cupcakes that are as hilarious as they are delicious. Michelle Flowers made sure to bring the funny when it mattered most."
Flowers and Iacovelli will be dining at Slackwater Pub & Pizzeria in Ogden to watch the episode air at 6 p.m.
